Community Baboon Sanctuary

The Community Baboon Sanctuary's visitor center located in Bermudian Landing Village opens daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm. It is only about 5 minutes walk from here, Howler Monkey Resort.

The Community Baboon Sanctuary's(CBS)four main goals are Conservation, Education, Research, and Tourism

The Community Baboon Sanctuary (CBS) is a pioneering project in voluntary grassroots conservation. The goal is to sustain the habitat of the Black Howler Monkey (called baboon' in the local Creole dialect) while promoting the economic development of the participating communities. The result has been an innovative project in sustainable ecotourism that protects the habitat for the endangered Black Howler Monkey and other species while offering a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the rainforest and witness Black Howler Monkeys in the wild.

The Community Baboon Sanctuary Museum opened in April 1989 with museum exhibits coordinated by Dr. Robert H. Horwich. The Lincoln Park Zoological Society, World Wildlife Fund - U.S., and the Zoological Society of Milwaukee County contributed financial support and exhibits. The Belize Audubon Society gave administrative support. For over 15 years, the Museum and Visitor's Center has been the central point of the Sanctuary.

Although at Howler Monkey Resort you stand a good chance of seeing black howler monkeys( alouatta pigra) in the wild -- you might still want to visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary visitor's center which is a short five minute walk from here. With the price of the entrance fee they take you to see monkeys up close and personal. This tour ususally takes approximately one hour.
